No Accountant Privilege – CRA seizes files from Accounting Firm Grant Thornton
The Canada Revenue Agency executed a warrant issued for the collection of records relating to allegations that a specific corporation and individual had committed offences under the Income Tax Act and has seized several files from a Halifax branch of accounting firm Grant Thornton. While clients of Canadian tax lawyers enjoy legal privilege meaning that no files can be seized, clients of accountants enjoy no such protection. The files seized from an accountant can be used in tax prosecution against the accountant’s client.
