Canadian tax lawyer David Rotfleisch, founder and senior tax lawyer at Rotfleisch & Samulovitch PC, and Cassandra Knapman, an associate at Rotfleisch & Samulovitch, recently wrote an article on TheLawyersDaily.com. In their writeup, David and Cassandra have selected a few cautionary tales from the tax crypt for this Halloween season.
“The ability to go into your bank account and seize funds; the ability to garnishee wages; the ability to seize assets, including business accounts receivable; the ability to put a lien on your home — these are all powers available to CRA collection officers without the need to go to court. It may not be bloodsucking or flying but is probably scarier than what vampires do at night. Not scared enough? Then consider that CRA can issue an arbitrary assessment, even if you have not filed a tax return, and then proceed to collect the amount it says is owing.”
